开放原子与Eclipse两基金会联合发布EPL-2.0许可证中译文
北京和布鲁塞尔,2024年 12 月 20 日
Beijing and Brussels, December 20, 2024
The OpenAtom Foundation, China’s first open source foundation and the Eclipse Foundation, Europe’s largest open source organization, today jointly announced the release of a mutually recognized Chinese Translation of Eclipse Public License, version 2.0 (download the Chinese translation). Open-source licenses are the cornerstone of ensuring seamless functioning of open source ecosystem, and most of the open source licenses are agreements made in legal English by lawyers of the license stewards (usually international open-source foundations). This is often a high barrier to understanding and compliance for those who are unfamiliar with the terms and conditions of the legal agreements and the terminology of the software, especially for those who do not speak English as a first language. Concerns for many developers and businesses, especially those who shy away from relatively complex copyleft-based licenses, and often discourage them from fully using and contributing to open source. Forming and providing accurate and credible Chinese translations of licenses that are already widely used in the software field is of great significance in helping Chinese developers, enterprises and the general public in raising their awareness of both licensing and open source concepts and in building a genuine consensus.

开放原子开源基金会理事长程晓明指出:“开放原子高度重视开源许可证的研究制定与交流合作。很高兴我们基于与Eclipse基金会的良好合作,首次促成了全球社区知名开源许可证的管理方对许可证中译文的正式认可并联合发布,为产业与开发者的开源实践提供可靠的专业化支持。”
Xiaoming Cheng, chairman of the Board of Directors at the OpenAtom Foundation, pointed out that “OpenAtom is deeply committed to the research, development and cooperation in regard to open-source licenses. It is our great pleasure to have the Chinese translation of a popular FOSS license in world-wide community, for the first time, officially recognized and jointly publicized together with the globally well-known steward of the license, under our friendly collaboration with the Eclipse Foundation. Through this co-effort, we provide both the industry and developers with reliable and professional support in practice.”
Eclipse基金会执行董事迈克·米林科维奇(Mike Milinkovich)也对此次合作成果表示肯定:“Eclipse基金会是EPL许可证的管理方,我们支持了开放原子开源基金会进行此次翻译工作。我们相信这一译文将有助于中国开发者对EPL-2.0的使用,并期待有更多中国的项目和社区使用它。在此特别感谢开放原子开源基金会对这一中译文的支持与倡议。”
Mike Milinkovich, the Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation, expressed appreciation for this collaboration that “Eclipse Foundation is the steward of the EPL and we supported the OpenAtom Foundation in their translation. We feel that this translation will help increase the adoption of the EPL-2.0 amongst Chinese developers and we look forward to seeing it being used by more projects and communities in China. I want to specifically thank the OpenAtom Foundation for their support and their initiative in making this translation possible. ”
To further empower the industry and developers in understanding and adopting popular open-source licenses originally made in legal English, the Contransus Translation Project launched by the OpenAtom Foundation is devoted to producing professional, credible and publicly accessible translations. The EPL-2.0 license, developed by the Eclipse Foundation, is a weak copyleft license widely adopted by famous projects such as Eclipse IDE and Jakarta EE. Consistently ranking among the most widely used licenses for the global open source communities, it is not only meets the Open Source Definition and approved by the OSI, but also satisfies the Four Freedoms and certified by the FSF.
From August to November 2024, the Contransus Project organized community contributors to translate, discuss and review for several rounds the EPL-2.0 and its official FAQ (see EPL-2.0 FAQ translation). The Chinese translation candidates were then submitted to the Eclipse Foundation for further review and both foundations reached a consensus on the finalized translations after rounds of communication. At the opening ceremony of the 2024 OpenAtom Developer Conference, Mr. Bo LI, Assistant Secretary-General of the OpenAtom Foundation, and Mr. Bryan Che, Board Director of the Eclipse Foundation, jointly published the Chinese translation of EPL-2.0 license for and on behalf of both foundations. They also handed the Acknowledgement Certification to the translation contributors from Alibaba Cloud Computing Ltd., Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd., University of International Business and Economics, Shanghai International Studies University and China Electronic Product Reliability and Environmental Testing Institute (CEPREI), etc.
本次两基金会就EPL-2.0许可证及其官方问答中译文的联合审定与发布,既成为开发者交流的桥梁,也标志着开放原子开源基金会在推动开源许可证的本地化与国际合作方面开启新篇章。“源译识”项目希望未来持续通过在许可证方面的社区共建协作,共建专业可信、公开可用的多语种开源资料库,持续传递开源之声。
This collaboration between both foundations on joint review and publication of Chinese translations of the EPL-2.0 and its official FAQ, serves as a bridge for developers and marks a new chapter of the OpenAtom’s advancement in localization and international cooperation of open-source licenses. Looking ahead, the Contransus Project aims to continue building a professional, reliable, and publicly accessible multilingual database on open-source key knowledge through community contribution and collaboration, and continue spreading the voices of open source far and wide.
